Running on a Treadmill for Starters

Running on a treadmill is one of the best ways of exercise you can do at a fitness center or at home, although treadmills are the easiest cardio machines to use unfortunately many of starters use the treadmill improperly for their fitness targets. Here are some tips to help you to get the most from it.

First things first, so if you attend a fitness class or buy a treadmill after reading reviews, but what is your main goal. Do you want to get rid of the extra fat or strengthen your cardiovascular muscles and cardio, or do you want to use it just to warm up before your main weight lift session? So you must decide and be sure about the reason first so that you can find a program that will help you.

As with every sports and fitness equipment, proper usage of the treadmill is a must, both for your safety and your health. So before starting to use your treadmill read the instructions or ask a trainer in the gym to learn the main functions like setting the speed, pausing, and emergency stop.

Do not be unrealistic with your goals, start with a realistic speed and incline that will challenge you, and you will have time for more difficult exercises. Max Speed does not guarantee burning more fat. To burn fat long workouts with moderate intensity are the best way to go.

Treadmills are designed for simulating walking or running indoors. With a good treadmill, you will burn about the same number of calories as real walking or running outdoors. Some advanced models really simulate a walk/run on a road or path. They adjust the incline automatically as adjusted with personal programs so it will be more interesting and challenging.

Always wear a pair of running shoes for when you are using the treadmill, using treadmills barefoot is dangerous and not healthy at all. Also, remember that our feet tend to follow our eyes, so focus straight ahead if you want to stay on the machine.

10 Things to Consider While Comparing Treadmills

  • Motor Horsepower: This is the most important thing when comparing treadmills. More horsepower (hp) means better and smoother performance at high speeds. This is also very related to the life of the machine.
  • Several workout programs: Learn how many pre-programmed workouts come with the machine. These programs are a great way to simulate real sprints and run on different terrain types.
  • Folding or Non-Folding: Treadmills are big machines that need big spaces so if you plan to use them from time to time, search for foldable ones. There are even some high-end models that fold up with a touch of a button automatically.
  • Running Area: The width and length of the running area are other important factors.
  • LED/LCD User Display and Buttons: Is it easy to use, are the buttons spaced logically.
  • Warranty: Read the warranty rules carefully. Usually, manufacturers give different lengths of warranties to different parts of the treadmills.
  • Maximum User Weight: How much weight is too much for the treadmill?
  • Incline Mechanism and Type: The maximum incline angle, is it manual, or has a power incline feature.
  • Heart Rate Monitor Type: Is it wireless or do you need a cable, or does it make the measurement from handlebars.
  • Price
